This Is My Story
After finishing my studies in Computer Science, I chose an unconventional path. Instead of taking a high-paying software engineering job, I decided to do an unpaid internship at a tech startup in Cape Town. My goal was to escape routine, discover the world, improve my language skills, build new relationships, and gain diverse work experience. I didn’t know back then that this decision would spark the creation of HomeAwe.
How It Started
During the transformative 6-month internship in Cape Town — even though I turned down a higher-paying job offer — I realized that sitting behind a desk as a software engineer wasn’t my passion. I dreamed of creating a platform that combines my love for travel, volunteering, storytelling, and building a community of like-minded people searching for unique experiences and personal growth.
From Volunteering to Impact
As I traveled across Europe advocating for international volunteering opportunities, I promoted programs on various platforms. But I noticed a gap — potential volunteers lacked information and assurance about the experiences. To bridge that gap, I left my job, turned to Instagram, and became a backpacking volunteer, content creator, and changemaker — living the true essence of HomeAwe.

Through HomeAwe, we aim to challenge stereotypes, represent our culture on a global scale, and foster connection, understanding, and appreciation between diverse communities.
From humble beginnings, HomeAwe has grown rapidly — reaching over 500,000 followers and inspiring over 100 individuals to embark on meaningful volunteer journeys.
Our goal is to grow this impact even further by empowering 1,000+ people to volunteer in 2024 and reaching one million followers worldwide.
